Goodies Co. Box Review, April 2013

2 May

SAMSUNG

This showed up on my door this weekend. Hooray for snacks to accompany a rainy Sunday movie binge!

The Box: Goodies Co. – A monthly box of 5-8 new and interesting snacks and goodies from Wal-Mart.

Price: $7/month including taxes and shipping

SAMSUNG

The Goodies:

  • Angie’s Popcorn – Sweet and Salty Kettle Corn
  • Green Giant – Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips
  • True Bar – Coconut Cashew Bar
  • Zone Perfect – Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bar
  • Celsius – Raspberry Acai Green Tea Energy Drink
  • Olomomo Nuts – Righteous Cinnamon Cayenne Almonds

Llwynog Says…

This is my first Goodies Co. Taster’s Box. I was really pleasantly surprised to see how healthy everything in the box was. I was all over the kettlecorn and the package was a perfect snack size. It was soooo good and the best part is that there are 4 ingredients, including the sunflower oil it is popped it, which gives it a really tasty unique flavor. I attempted the Cinnamon Cayenne Almonds, but they aren’t much my style, I can’t do anything too spicy. These taste sweet at first and then kick you in the mouth with an intense heat. I only ate one, the rest will go to a friend. I’d be interested to see if Olomomo makes any other flavors though.

I also tried to Coconut Cashew True Bar. It was alright, but a bit on the dry side. I’m not sure I’d seek it out. I’m terrified of the Zone Perfect bar, because from the packaging it looks just like very other health/protein bar and I’ve had far too many unpleasant experiences with those.

I’m keeping my subscription with Goodies and I look forward to seeing what shows up in May. Seven bucks is pretty inexpensive for a food box, thanks to the buying power of Wal-Mart. The program is still in the beta stages but you can sign up for an invite on their site.

Pantyfly Review, April 2013

1 May

Catching up on some of my April boxes that I got behind on at the end of the month….

Pantyfly sent me some really cute selections this month! I’m so glad I signed up with them. Fabulous price, excellent quality, and their customer service is KILLER. I mean, seriously, these guys are awesome.

SAMSUNG

I would recommend sizing up one size if you’re at all concerned about fit. I’ve found that with the first two packages from PantyFly that the sizing runs a little small. Or I’m just getting fat.

Pantyfly sends you 3 pairs of underwear each month for $9.

Love with Food Box Review, April 2013

14 Apr

I get so excited whenever I see this little bright red box in my mail!

SAMSUNG

The Box: Love With Food – Monthly themed boxes of gourmet food. With each box purchased, a meal is donated to a hungry child.

Price: $10 + $2 shipping each month

SAMSUNG

Items Included:

  • The Good Bean – Smoky Chili & Lime Chickpea Snacks
  • Mini Pops – Air Popped Sorghum Grain
  • Somersault Snacks – Salty Pepper Nuggets
  • Oloves – Lemony Lover Olives
  • Buff Lo Dip – Creamy Buffalo Ranch Dip
  • Pollen Ranch – Organic Fennel Pollen
  • JJ’s Sweets – Original & Sea Salt Caramel Cocomels

Llwynog Says:

I was a little worried when I got an email from Love With Food about Andew Zimmern curating this month’s box and the theme was “Weird, Wild, & Wonderful Foods”. I was a bit nervous I’d end up with dried squid snacks and chocolate covered grasshoppers, which I probably would have tried, but might not have enjoyed. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised to find instead an interesting array of items that all sound tasty.

I haven’t tried everything yet, but of course I went for the caramels first. Or “cocomels”, rather. These are dairy-free, made with coconut milk, which gives them such an interesting flavor and texture. Definitely my favorite thing in the box.

I also snacked on the Salt and Pepper nuggets.

SAMSUNG

They’re a bit like a sunflower seed cracker. The flavor is really nice, transitioning from salty, to peppery, to garlic-y. They’re a bit dry on their own, but I think they’d be pretty tasty dipped into hummus or something.

I’m planning to take the packaging suggestion and rub the fennel pollen on pork chops this week. It made my whole box smell amazing.

This month, Love with Food contributed a meal via Open Arms of Minnesota for each box purchased.

Llwynog Says:

I was a little disappointed that there was a lot of like “kid/baby” type stuff since thats not really useful for me. It would be great if Conscious Box could implement some sort of profile or preference system since I’m sure there are people who love baby stuff and others like myself who have no use for it. I’ll probably toss the lotion in my desk drawer or something, one can never have too much spare lotion.  I also can’t really drum up any interest in the supplements and whey. I’ll pass those along to a friend.

I am, however, really excited to try the Seventh Generation Facial Cleansing Cloth. I love their products! And Celestial Tea! Yay!

My bottle of detergent seems to be about half empty, but its plenty for a few loads of laundry even still and the smell is fab so I’m looking forward to giving that a shot. Not a big bar soap user, but I’ll put this little lavender one away for another day. I’m really confused by the Omega-3 Squeeze. Do you take it like a gooey shot? Dissolve it in water? I’m clueless. I’ve had another flavor of Happy Squeeze before, so I’ll enjoy trying this one, even though I hate their packaging. Anything coconut has to be good though, right?

Total value: Cannot be determined.

QVC New Beauty Test Tube Review, April 2013

13 Apr

I was a little confused by this sub at first because there seem to be two versions; the standard New Beauty Test Tube, and another version offered via QVC. Mine was purchased from QVC.

qvc tt

Price: $29.96 + $6.47 S&H

Items Included:

  • 1-fl oz Algenist Triple-Action Micropolish and Peel ($34.09)
  • 6-fl oz WEN by Chaz Dean Replenishing Treatment Mist – Fig FULL SIZE! ($27.00)
  • 0.04-oz tarte Skinny smolderEYES Amazonian Clay Waterproof Eyeliner – Sunstone Bronze FULL SIZE! ($19.00)
  • 1-fl oz Peter Thomas Roth Antiaging Cleansing Gel – Travel size ($2.43)
  • 0.39-fl oz Mally Beauty Volumizing Mascara in Black FULL SIZE! ($20.00)
  • 0.4-fl oz philosophy hope in a jar night – Travel size (?)
  • 0.17-fl oz Josie Maran Argan Oil – Travel size (?)
  • 0.60-fl oz Perfect Formula Manicure Booster ($8.95)
  • NewBeauty magazine
  • QVC booklet with product details and suggestions

Total value = At least $111.47

Not sure about the values on the Argan oil and hope in a jar, math is not my forte, but both are nice sized samples as you can see from the photo. The magazine has a price on it of $9.95, but I’ve never seen it in any store and I chucked it in the recycling after a quick flip-through revealed it was 98% advertisements.

Llwynog Says:

Definitely good value for the money! Also, it was really nice that this is a box you can just order and get in a few days instead of waiting several weeks for it. Although, its not as much fun to know in advance what you’re getting, it is somewhat of a relief to know I will get more than what I pay for.

– The Algenist peel may be re-gifted. It looks nice, but I already have a ton of a similar product from Mary Kay that I forget to use.

– I’m really interested in the WEN hair mist. I’m not really sure what to use it for, but the fig scent is really nice, if a little strong at first. The literature says to spritz it in the mid-to-ends of your hair and rake it through to add moisture, or use as a leave in conditioner. There is also an interesting suggestion to use it as a make-up finishing spray or even as a moisturizing body spray. Interesting. I like anything that can multitask.

– The tarte eyeliner is FANTASTIC! I used it this morning and it stayed put all day. Normally with smudgy/smoky eyeliner it either fades or smudges where you dont want it. This one sat still and the one I received was a nice bronze-y shade that complemented the neutral shades I typically wear to work. I’m not certain what’s special about Amazonian Clay, but I’ll take it.

– I see Mally on QVC all the time when I’m channel surfing and I can’t ever tell if I love or hate her.  But, I was really interested to try this mascara. I used it today, and as advertised it did not flake. However, I don’t think it was any more spectacular than a standard drug store mascara that’s half the price. Nice to have it included in the tube though, it will definitely get used.

– Peter Thomas Roth cleansing gel: smells nice, will be good to throw in with my travel stuff.

– I’m not really in the age bracket for the philosophy hope in a jar night cream, but I will give it a try. The literature promises that it will “wake up to beautiful skin and a radiant complexion”, which I think anyone would like to take advantage of.

– I’ve been hearing so much about argan oil lately, I was really excited to get this Josie Maran deluxe sample size. A little of the stuff goes a long way. I massaged a tiny bit into my cuticles this morning and I have to say that I did notice an improvement. My nail beds typically get very dry through out the day and I often get hangnails. Not the case so far, very impressed. Plus, this is another major multitasker. It can be used for hair and other skin as well. Awesome.

– I CAN NOT WAIT to give the manicure booster a shot this weekend. I have the worst time with chipping nails. I’ll keep you all posted on the results.

Overall, I’m super happy with everything I got. Even though it wasn’t a surprise, the test tube is a great value. I know some people who get this on auto-delivery are sick of the usual “QVC brands” but seeing as this was my first one I was really excited about everything in it.

Get It: QVC is still offering the Spring New Beauty Test Tube on their website, but quantities are limited. Also, Ebates members get 2.5% cash back on QVC purchases.

pantiesss

Items Included:

  • American Apparel Cotton Spandex Jersey Boy Brief – $13 (x2)
  • American Apparel Cotton Spandex Hot Short – $14

Total Value: $40

Llwynog Says…

I had no idea what I’d end up with on this one since they are a really new sub. I was pleasantly surprised that I received 3 pairs of good quality American Apparel undies. They’re cute and I’ll definitely wear them. And the value for what I paid is absolutely incredible!

Also, according to the letter that came along with my new panties, PantyFly is working on adding other options to their $7 a month package. They’re also working on other improvements to offer more value to their members and from what I can tell so far their customer service is pretty amazing.

What’s for dinner? Hello Fresh!

23 Mar

Its no secret that I’m not much of a cook…

But I have an excuse! I’m in my 20’s! I’m single! I live alone! I dont need to be a good cook…. but I’d like to be.

Last night, I made this tasty dinner :

Dinner

It looks like I planned, prepared, and worked really hard at it, right?

I’d like to take all the credit, but I had a lot of help, in the form of a delivery from Hello Fresh.

Each week, Hello Fresh subscribers choose which 3 of 5 meal options they’d like to try. Hello Fresh does all the shopping and ships overnight everything you need to prepare the meal, including meat and dairy. They even send detailed instructions with pictures, so its fool-proof.

This is what the box looked like when I opened it:

SAMSUNG

There were several labeled bags telling me which ingredients went with which recipe, very helpful.

The evenings options:

SAMSUNG

I decided to make the Warm Goat Cheese Salad with Chicken and Avocado. I pulled out the bags for that and here’s what I had:

SAMSUNG

I love that the even included packets of olive oil and honey. The only things I provided were a tablespoon of butter, a bit of salt and pepper, and some very basic cooking implements. The instructions walked me through prepping the avocado and mango, preparing the Honey and Garlic Vinaigrette, cooking the chicken, and even toasting breadcrumbs for the goat cheese.

The end result was delicious. All the ingredients were fresh and of excellent quality. Its not really in my budget to do this every week, but fortunately they offer a pause option, so I can choose to get one or two boxes a month.

The Box: Hello Fresh

Price: $69/box for 3 meals for 2 people. $59 for vegetarians.  There are also options available for 3 meals for 4 or 6 people.

The Deal: Use my referral code (Z65RMG) as a coupon when you order and save $20 off your first box!

Total value on this one is tough to determine but I’d say its worth welllll more than what I paid for it. Anyway, for me, skipping a trip to the grocery store is priceless anyhow. I’ve been raving to all of my friends about how much I love Hello Fresh and I cant wait to try more from them.
